The Birthday Girl

It’s been a pretty busy week around here.

Traveling for Thanksgiving.

A big birthday to celebrate.

2 years old! We celebrated at her Move & Groove class and at the zoo. It was a cold day to be outside but we enjoyed it. She also got a big girl bed this week. Big changes at our house and she’s doing great with them.

And now we are getting ready for her party this weekend.

Thanks to my new treadmill, running is going well. It’s just a little bit at a time and only every few days. But I’m running! 27 weeks pregnant today.

I’m loving wearing shorts again while running. Putting out the summer running clothes the night before helps me to get ready a lot quicker in the morning. It’s much easier to put on shorts and a t-shirt than all the layers that are required for running outside during this cold weather. Dressing with my big belly is quite an effort…as is just about everything these days!

This morning I tried doing a run/walk to see if I could get in more than my usual 1 mile that I have been running for the past week or so. I started out at a 4:1 ratio for the first 1.5 miles and then switched to a 3:2 ratio for the last half mile. I liked doing this better then running the mile at the beginning and walking to round out my 30 minute(ish) workout that I have been trying to get in. I was also on the treadmill for about a half a mile longer (with my walking cool down at the end) and for about 10 more minutes. Success!

An Early Christmas

Lucky for me, there was a great deal on a treadmill just when I needed one. I’ve never owned a treadmill before and I’ve never particularly loved running on one. But if it is a choice between not running and running on a treadmill, I pick the treadmill.

It’s been set up for two days now and because of my new friend I ran on both of those days!

I took a week off because I was pretty sore after my last 5K race. (My sciatic nerve has been killing me! I don’t think from the run, just from pregnancy in general.) I wanted my body to get some good rest and I was beginning to wonder if my days of running while pregnant were over. Without the treadmill I doubt I would have gotten much more running in in the next 5 months or so. 5 months! I can’t imagine. I’m so glad that I now have the opportunity to run when I have little bits of time throughout the day.

So far both of my runs have happened while my kids are playing in the same room. We have a playroom set up in our family room downstairs. It’s easy for me to keep an eye on them and run at the same time. They love it because they love playing downstairs so it works perfectly!

Since I took some time off I’m starting from the beginning again. My two runs were just a mile each but today I walked another mile to round out the workout and make it just over 30 minutes. It felt wonderful. Yesterday my sciatic nerve felt great for the rest of the day after running in the morning. I’m so glad that running didn’t aggravate it!

I never thought I would be so excited about owning a treadmill!

A Different Kind of Motivation

Lately I have spent some time reevaluating my running motivation. Over the past year or so, signing up for races has been my best motivation to get out and run. Racing while pregnant is a completely different story and it has become too hard to complete the 5K distance comfortably.

Sunday I ran a 5K and I enjoyed it but at 6 months pregnant it was tough.

I think a little too tough. I haven’t been running that distance or very regularly since my last 5K and it showed in how I ran (slowly) and how I felt afterwards (sore legs).

Yikes, that’s a whole lot of not running!

As a past (and hopefully future!) marathoner and half marathoner who loves distance running, the fact that I am finding a mere 3.1 miles too much for me right now is very difficult to wrap my head around. I know I am pregnant, I know that changes everything and I know that every pregnancy is different for every woman.

Exercise feels best first thing in the morning. My body is fresh from resting during the night but it is still so hard to get up early and run. I’m just tired and need rest at this point in my pregnancy. Now that the mornings are so cold, it is even harder to get out of my warm bed to hit the freezing streets.

I know, I know. Excuses, excuses.

I’m trying to change my motivation. I want to be motivated to run (or walk, if needed) to get my exercise in. If it is only a mile or two at a time it is still exercise. So, I’m training myself to change my motivation.

My new motivation: Running or walking for any distance to be healthy for both myself and the baby.
