August 2013 in Review

A Sunday post!?! Yes, it’s the beginning of a new month and I like to wrap things up and then start the new month off fresh. So a Sunday post it is! My August in Review post is today and my regular weekly training update post will go out tomorrow.

Mothering Moments

My favorite new thing about Little O (who turns 4 in September) is watching him ride on his tricycle. He LOVES it and I look forward to our neighborhood walks with the trike maybe as much as he does.

August 2013 in Review | A Mother's Pace

Little A is potty training right now (She’ll turn 3 in November) and she lives in just her underwear. Completely her choice, she just likes to hang out with no clothes. I’m fine with it because it means less laundry (and stains…she is a messy eater!!) and she always puts on clothes just fine when we leave the house.

You’ll have to make due with a random fully clothed picture of her. :) One of the hard things about her always being in underwear is that it makes taking and sharing pictures hard. Like the other day when she got out my foam roller with the directions and started rolling out her belly, legs and rear. So cute and, of course, all in her underwear!

Little E is at such a fun baby stage. (She’s 6 months old.) Sitting up, chatting with all her baby sounds, just starting solid food and so much more. Fun, fun fun!

Racing/Training in July

No racing to report in August but I’m getting very close to my September race. I’m right at the peak of my mileage before taper starts next week.
Challenges

I participated in the #AugustCoreFocus challenge this month and started off great. I love the idea of the challenge but for some reason couldn’t make myself stick with it this month. Core work is important to me as well as general strength training but I think the thing that makes it most difficult is that lately my kids are not napping really well.

A Few of my Favorites from A Mother’s Pace

5 Minutes a Day

Go figure that one of my most popular posts was about the #AugustCoreFocus challenge! I really like how some people took this idea and commented how they wanted to try it out with other areas of their life. It’s changed how I think about cleaning my house as well!

Running Long on the Treadmill

August was not a typical month weather-wise. We had a ton of rain and storms so I ran on the treadmill more than usual. I believe I have learned to love my treadmill.

Running Double Digits

This month I finally reached my first postpartum double digits! I’d missed running long throughout my pregnancy and recovery and I’m glad to be back at it.

Running without a Watch

Another popular post this month. I had some watch problems and was forced to run without my watch for several runs. It wasn’t quite as hard as I thought it was going to be but I’m glad to have a watch back.

Favorite Running Gear

Yes, I have a new watch. And I’ll write more about it later but my favorite running gear this month would have to be my new Nike+ sport watch. I love it and I can’t say enough about Nike’s customer service department.

It’s been awhile since I passed 100 miles in a month! It feels good to be running some high mileage again.

How was your August? Did you hit any mileage goals? What fun things are your kids doing lately?

New Running Fuel

During this round of half marathon training I am determined to change my fueling habits during running, especially the long runs.

Now that my weekend running is up in the double digits I’ve been playing around with new things and attempting to find out what will work well for me on race day.

My fueling before was typical for most runners and included Gu, Gatorade and water. Lately I’ve been focusing on cutting out processed food and so the above combination isn’t going to work for me anymore. I know the following products are not perfect but they are a step in the right direction.

The first new products I am using are from the Honey Stinger line.

Oh, and now might be a good time to let you know that this is not a sponsored post. I’ve purchased all of these products on my own and I am enjoying them right now. I am not receiving any compensation from the companies. That said, this post does contain affiliate links. If you click on them to find out more info or purchase items you will be supporting my blog.

I’ve never eaten chews while running before and I’m surprised at how much I love them. I’ve tried all three of the flavors above (Fruit Smoothie, Limeade and Cherry Blossom) and can’t pick a favorite flavor. They were all good and refreshing to eat while running. I’ve been snacking on one package during all my double digit runs lately and basically eating the entire package in thirds throughout my run. They seem to help my energy level and keep me going for the longer miles.

I’m still trying to figure out how to eat these and keep on running though. I’ve been putting them in a baggie and getting them out of my hydration pack but I have to slow down or walk to do it. This weekend I’m going to wear my shorts with pockets and divide the chews into thirds beforehand. I’m hoping this makes them easier to grab and will allow me to keep running. Any other tips on how to do this?

Also pictured above are the Honey Stinger energy gels. So far I’ve had two of these. During my last 11 mile run I forgot to take a gel and I bonked big time at the end. The next 12 mile run I remembered to take the gel and made it through feeling much better. I enjoyed both but I did prefer the Vanilla over the Fruit Smoothie. They were both good but the vanilla was really good

Now on to hydration.

I’ve been running long with my hydration pack filled with water. I’ve heard of people putting Nuun in their pack but I haven’t been brave enough to try it yet because I’m concerned that I would miss water during my run. So instead I’m drinking some electrolytes before my run.

I have been enjoying the Watermelon, Strawberry Lemonade, and Grape flavors so far and I’m going to try the Cherry Limeade soon. So far if I had to pick a favorite it would be Watermelon followed closely by the Strawberry Lemonade.

There are also a few things that I’m curious about but haven’t tried yet. The first is raisins instead of chews. Definitely a more natural choice but I need to try it and make sure that they gives me what I need for my run. The second thing I would like to try is coconut water for natural electrolytes. I’ve bought it already and I’m trying some this weekend.

And before I let you go, here is a little Open House Day dance. I can’t even imagine how exciting the first day of preschool is going to be next week!

How do you hydrate before or during a long run? Do you use gels, chews or other types of fuel while running?
Today I’m linking up with Jill Conyers and Running Bloggers for Fitness Friday.

Riding Bikes and Running

Saturday was Pedalfest here in Wichita. My husband rode the 50K with his dad, uncle and brother-in-law, along with a lot of friends.

The kids, Nana and I cheered on the riders at two SAG stops along the way. It’s such a fun event and is getting larger every year. Pedalfest is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary but this is the 3rd year my husband has participated.

My oldest is also loving his ‘bike’ right now. He just recently really learned how to pedal all on his own and I just love watching him go. We’ve been going on a lot of walks around the neighborhood.

Fall is coming and so are the darker mornings. Because my husband and I are both running in the morning before he goes to work I am not running as early as I used to. (He runs first and then I head out after he gets back.) By the time I leave around 6:30 the sun is starting to come up but I’ve had to use my light a little bit this past week.

Can’t believe that my first half marathon of the fall is in just 3 weeks! I’m getting nervous excited already.

My long run yesterday was 12 miles. 12 miles without a watch. Ugh! And on top of that my Nike+ app on my phone was not set up to tell me the pace every mile. So I was running completely naked with no feedback for over 2 hours.

That made it a tough run mentally. It also was a tough run physically. I didn’t make it out of the house as early as I wanted so it was getting pretty warm and the humidity was high. It was one of those runs where I wonder why am I doing this??? At least I know a good run is right around the corner and I can look forward to that.
