My Treadmill PDR + My Favorite New Treadmill Running Tip

My daughter’s first birthday was this week and we had her party last Sunday. We had family in town and a busy day of activities scheduled on both Saturday and Sunday.

I knew I needed to get in a tough 12 mile run at some point but I wasn’t quite sure how that was going to happen. Finally I decided that the easiest way would be to wake up super early and just get it done.

Easier said than done when you have family in town and are up late the night before.

But I did it. I set my alarm for 5:00, ignored the snooze button and got out of bed. I got ready and then headed down to the treadmill. I don’t like running alone in the dark so lately all my early morning running has been done on the treadmill.

The treadmill has been tough lately, mentally. Sometimes an easy 3 mile run can feel like FOREVER. But this run was a little different. I knew I had to get in 12 miles and I knew I couldn’t cut it short.

I needed a plan and I remembered back to some treadmill tips from my treadmill runner hero, RunEMZ. She recently ran 100 miles on a treadmill in less than 24 hours to raise money for charity! Pretty much anything she suggests about treadmill running, I take seriously. She inspires me daily on Instagram, so go follow her if you don’t already.

I read somewhere (I really wish I could remember where!) that to get through long miles RunEMZ sometimes puts names on post-its and dedicates miles to people. This turned out to be the perfect motivation for my run on Saturday.

I filled out the post-its the night before and dedicated a mile to someone that I know that has been or is currently struggling with cancer. 12 miles and 12 names. It’s very sad to me that I can come up with a list like that easily.

I’m not going to say that the run was easy. Before this the longest run on the treadmill that I have accomplished was 9 miles. These 12 miles were challenging but they did go by very quickly for me. Every time doubt would creep into my head as to whether or not I thought I could finish the run I would just glance down at a name. Just thinking about that person…my niece, a good friend, a mother of 10 that just found out she has cancer for the second time…just thinking about these people and more pushed me to finish out the mile I was running.

My training called for 12 miles with 4 at race pace. I warmed up with the treadmill set to 6.3 (~9:30 pace) and then bumped it up to 6.6-6.7 (~9:05-8:57 pace) for 4 miles at ‘race pace.’ I wrapped up the run with the last 4 miles at around a 9:30 pace.

I finished the run in 1:52:06 with an average pace of 9:20. Last time I ran 9 miles on my treadmill it shut off at some point. Either I had reached a certain distance or time cap and the thing powered off. To avoid that this time around I stopped it at 1 hour to reset the clock and miles.

The benefit of running on the treadmill is I don’t have to worry about missing a pace goal. I just set the treadmill and run. I know it’s not the ideal way to pace a run but it definitely works when it’s needed.

I was tempted to keep running and just get in 13.1. Crazy, I know, but I’m so close now I know I want to accomplish a half marathon on the mill at some point.

What is your treadmill PDR (personal distance record)? What secrets do you have for getting in long miles on the treadmill?

Thinking Out Loud About My Little E

It’s Thursday and this week that means I’m thinking out loud and sharing a few random thoughts that are rolling around in my head.

Thinking Out Loud About My Little E | A Mother's Pace

Little E is walking. She loves to be on her feet and most of the time that means behind a walker but she’s taken about 8 steps at a time on her own. She’s so proud when she walks and always has a huge smile on her face.

I’m currently reading “The Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Kline. It’s historical fiction about something I didn’t even know existed. I’m almost half way through it right now and and so far I’m enjoying it.

One of my favorite laundry helpers. She likes to go from room to room picking up laundry with me and then riding the basket to the laundry room.

These stairs are a favorite activity. We could seriously go up and down these all day long.

Little E’s favorite meal right now is pasta. Or one of her favorites, she’s a really good eater. She loves to suck the pasta in and it’s pretty cute to watch.

My niece sent us these bracelets for Valentine’s Day. It’s currently my favorite accessory!

I just realized I have no thoughts about running, yet, in this post! I’m currently breaking in two pairs of shoes. The Brooks Pure Flows and Saucony Ride 6′s. The Saucony’s are my all time favorite shoe but when I tried on the Pure Flows, I couldn’t resist. I like to rotate shoes and I was due for two more shoes anyway. The Pure Flows are a lower drop so I’m adding them in a mile at a time. I’m liking them a lot so far!

Yes, this was a little heavy on Little E but I can’t help myself. She turned 1 (!!!) this week and I’m having fun documenting her personality right now.

And, in case you missed it. She thoroughly enjoyed and destroyed her smash cake. So. Stinkin’. Cute.

Move, Nourish, Believe Challenge: Week 3

Last week was the third and final week of the Move, Nourish Believe Challenge with the Sweat Pink community and Lorna Jane. It’s three weeks of moving, nourishing and believing to help stay on track with healthy goals for the year.

So I took pictures throughout the week and shared them on Instagram. Are you on Instagram? Follow me and let me know your username below in the comments if I’m not following you already.

Week Three: BELIEVE

Monday: Spoil Yourself! Do something just for you today.

Move, Nourish, Believe Challenge: Week 3 | A Mother's Pace

My husband was off of work on Monday and I spoiled myself by working out in the afternoon instead of bright and early in the morning. That way instead of a treadmill run I was able to get outside and enjoy some beautiful weather. I also ran in brand new shoes, at least for a mile. I’m slowly adjusting my body to running in the lower drop Pure Flows, which I am loving so far.

I also followed up my run with some calf raises and other strength training. I took the time for myself to get my workout in! It was my special ‘me’ time of the day.

Tuesday: 5 Mindful Minutes. Do good to your body, meditate for 5 minutes and find your zen.

Move, Nourish, Believe Challenge: Week 3 | A Mother's Pace

I found my zen while waiting for my son to come out of his preschool. I had my coffee (probably not what most people drink during meditation…) and I just concentrated on breathing for a few minutes.

Wednesday: Be Happy. Show us your happy place!

Move, Nourish, Believe Challenge: Week 3 | A Mother's Pace

My happy place is anywhere that these four are. We are pretty lucky that my husband works from home and we are able to eat lunch and dinner together almost every day. In a world that is so busy it is nice to have this little bit of time together every day!

Thursday: Thankful Thursday. Let us know what you are thankful for!

Move, Nourish, Believe Challenge: Week 3 | A Mother's Pace

One year ago today, Little E was born. I’m thankful for so many things but today I am so thankful that we have this little blessing.

Friday: Share the love. Shout out to your #1 supporter/motivator.

Move, Nourish, Believe Challenge: Week 3 | A Mother's Pace

Of course, my greatest supporter is my husband. He’s my best friend and the love of my life. He believes in me and cheers me on in all areas of life, not just in running.

And that’s week three and the last week of the Move Nourish Believe Challenge. What a fun challenge! Click the following links to read my recaps from Week 1: Move and Week 2: Nourish.
