I can usually get about 500 miles out of a pair of running shoes before I start to notice a big difference in the quality of the shoe. Due to some poor planning on my part, my two pairs of shoes in rotation recently came close to this milestone at the same time.

Yes, that means I had the pleasure of going to one of our local running stores and buying TWO pairs of running shoes.

Now, I love my Saucony shoes. I’ve been in them for years. They’ve been good to me and we’ve spent many, many miles together.

But this time I wanted to branch out. I read in a recent Runner’s World shoe guide that the Saucony Kinvara’s or the Brooks PureFlow 3’s might be a good match for me according to my weekly mileage and the fact that I’m not prone to injury.

I tried both on and I overwhelmingly liked the PureFlow’s. I felt like I was cheating on Saucony, it felt wrong to want to go with Brooks, but I did and I’m very happy with my choice.

I didn’t leave Saucony behind altogether though. I also bought a pair of the Ride 6’s to add to my collection of Rides.

I’ve had both of the shoes for several weeks now so I thought it was time to let you know what I think about them.

The Saucony Ride’s are a shoe I’m familiar with. This pair didn’t feel as comfortable as my last pair of Ride’s with 500 miles on them but I think they just needed to be broken in a bit. The photo below is 3 miles vs. 500 miles. Quite a difference!

The Rides are just a good sturdy shoe that can handle a lot of miles. It’s my current shoe that I wear on most runs over 3 miles. I’ve mainly worn them on the treadmill but I’ve been out in them a few times as well. Last weekend I took them on my 13.1 long run of the week and they felt great.

The PureFlows are a lower drop shoe. Because they are different than what I am used to running in, I took a very conservative route to get used to wearing them. It’s not worth it to change a shoe only to find myself injured. For 3 weeks I just ran 1 mile at a time in them and then I would switch to a different pair of shoes and continue my run.

The first time I ran in them my shins felt different and that’s how I knew I needed to take the transition easy. I ran 4 1 milers in them but then this week, as I was running a scheduled 3 mile run, my legs felt great and I didn’t want to stop to change them out.

I ran over 3.5 miles in the PureFlows and just felt good overall. My favorite part about these shoes is the band that goes over the top of the foot. I feel that extra support and my foot really likes it. That band is what sold me on these shoes in the running store the second I put them on.

That’s great that you are new to running! When you are ready to buy new shoes I would highly recommend going into a local running store and asking for help. Our stores here do a great job of fitting a shoe to what a runner needs.

    Saucony Ride 6s are my shoe. LOVE them! I tried Kinavaras and I had to return them. My knees and hips felt them immediately. My husband loves his Kinavaras but I just couldn’t.

    • I’ve read in several different places that it can be good for your feet/legs to switch between types of shoes. That’s initially why I decided to add a lower drop shoe into the rotation. So far it’s working for me but I know that it doesn’t work for everyone. If I had to pick just one shoe forever it would be the Ride. It’s never let me down!

    While I was running a lot (2009 and 2010), I also owned two pairs of shoes that I would rotate, since I was running 5-6 days a week. I’ve always been an Asics loyal, but last summer, I decided I wanted to try a lower drop shoe, and now I have no idea what I’m running in (I bought two different lower drop shoes which I rotate now for my walks). Don’t you love buying new running shoes? I always loved getting the chance to try something new for my runs!

    • Yes, new running shoes are the best. I also love walking in the lower drop shoe. I wear it a lot throughout the day and it’s very comfortable but still supportive. I’ve never tried the Asics before but I’ve heard good things about them.

    I love buying new shoes! I’ve never tried alternating pairs like that before but have read a lot about it and will probably test it out sometime. Right now I’m wearing brooks adrenaline – they work really good for me especially because I pronate like crazy. They’re also much mor comfy than my previous pair of mizunos.

    Very smart to keep mileage in check until you felt comfortable. I am terrible with that, and very lucky that my body doesn’t punish me. The only time I really felt it was the ultra-minimal Merrell Vapor Glove (zero-drop and 2mm cushion).

    Right now I am running on New Balance Minimus v2 – great minimal shoes that I am totally loving in many ways (the Minimus v1 shredded my ankle), but they only have ~550 miles on them and are already nearing death (I tend to get tons of miles on my shoes).

    Before those it was Saucony Kinvara 4, then Nike Free Run 3 – both of those are 4mm drop ‘minimal’ shoes as well.

    I guess I really have no brand loyalty, as I am willing to consider just about anything for my next shoes … heard good things about Pearl Izumi, maybe will try those. I also have some Merrell AllOut Rush trail shoes I just started with, but really want those to last me through my Ultra in July.

    • I usually get around 500 miles on my shoes too. I’m sure you go through a ton of shoes, being an ultra runner! It’s so interesting to hear how various types of shoes work for different people, thanks for sharing.

    I used to be a Brooks girl but then I tried got the Asics Gel Noosa-Tri 6 and was in love. I also felt like I was cheating on Brooks. I have also recently got a pair of the UA RC Charge and love them!

    I switched to Brooks Pure Flow a few weeks ago and love love love them! I’ve been running in 4mm and less shoes for a while and the Pure Flow seems, so far, to be the best fit I’ve tried. Keep us updated. I’d love to know what you think.

    Run very very conservatively if you’re new to minimal!!

    • I bought my shoes the weekend before you wrote your recent post on shoes. You wrote about wearing different types of shoes and even different brands for variety. I was happy to read it because it reinforced my thoughts when buying the shoes! I’m staying at 3 miles at a time in the shoes for awhile and taking it very slowly. It’s hard because they are so comfortable but I’m trying to be smart about it. :)
