2014: The Year of the PR

Running in 2014 turned out to be pretty fantastic, even though I spent the last couple of months dealing with an injury. I could also call 2014 The Year of the PR, I’ll focus on that and not the injury! I discovered while going through races for this post that I set personal records in 8 of the 13 races that I ran this year! I know I’m probably not supposed to say it (because it’s about me…) but, that’s amazing!

Johnston's Half Marathon | amotherspace.net

I set my 5K PR in January and then broke it again in May. It now stands at 25:38. I set my 4 mile PR in March with a 34:04 time. In April I PR’d in the 10K with a time of 52:35. Then I made several half marathon PR’s. The first was in May (2:04:21) then again in August (2:02:37) and finally I broke the 2 hour barrier with another PR in September (1:57:02.) I ran my second full marathon in October and set a 40+ minute PR with the time of 4:22:54.

That’s most definitely a fantastic year! In fact, it makes me a little nervous about 2015 because in no way is it going to compare to how great 2014 was for my running. I’m okay with that though!

My goal race for the year was the Chicago Marathon in October. I spent the entire year preparing for it, even before training started. I wanted to make sure that I had a good base heading into training. The marathon turned out to be the best racing and possibly running experience of my life. Yes, it was that incredible. Did you miss that recap? You can read all about it —–> here. If you are contemplating running a marathon and the Chicago Marathon is one you are considering…sign up for the lottery or run for a charity, like the Ronald McDonald House. I can’t recommend it enough.

My year in numbers.

1,261.89: number of running miles

2014 blew away my past mileage high of 622 miles. I set my Run This Year goal way back in January to run 2,014 kilometers throughout the year. I exceeded it last week and went on to run a total of 2,030.82 kilometers for the year.

Run This Year | amotherspace.net

165.44: highest mileage in one month

12: number of running months

16: number of days with no running due to Plantar Fasciitus after the Chicago Marathon. (It felt like forever so I’m surprised to see that it was only 16 days!)

13: number of races (Frosty 5K, 3 5 by the 5th virtual races, St. Patrick’s Day Party and Run 4 miler, Easter SunRun 10K, World Run Virtual 10K, Spring Prairie Fire Half Marathon, Get Your Rear in Gear 5K, Southside Scorcher 10K, Run for Your Momma Half Marathon, Johnston’s Half Marathon, Chicago Marathon)

One of my goals for 2014 was to race 14 races. (#14in2014) if I had added them up before this week and found out I was only one race short I might have tried to squeeze one more race in this year!

4: number of virtual races (Spring 5 by the 5th Series + the World Run)

6: number of medals

2: Age Group Awards

0: number of DNS (did not start) races

4: number of states I ran in (KS, IA, OK, IL)

4: number of people in my (immediate) family that supported me every step of the way. I couldn’t have had the running year that I had without their understanding and support as I went out on all my miles this year.

So, I kinda feel like I was bragging a lot in this post. I’m proud of my running improvements over the year (and shocked by them) but I don’t mean to share them to brag.  I’ve had a good year and I always like to keep all these numbers in one nice little post at the end of the year. If you’ve made it to the end, thanks for reading!

Are you a numbers geek like me?
Do you like to look back on all the running numbers of the year?

Ballet & Running Outside

There’s only a little over two weeks left of the year and I only have 28.1 miles left to meet my 2014 running goal! The goal is within sight and I’m getting excited about it.

Most of my running lately is done early in the morning on the treadmill but I always try to get outside on the weekend. This weekend we had a dance recital and a lot of family visiting to see this little ballerina.

Seriously, it was a super cute performance. Yes, I know I’m biased but this mama was proud of her little girl.

So on Sunday after all the visiting family members left to go home I headed outside to run. I was hoping to beat the rain but that did not happen.

Last weekend when I ran outside it was drizzly and dreary outside. This weekend it started out the same but quickly escalated to a downpour. One of the best perks of running on the treadmill so much is that I still love the run, even when the weather isn’t the best. I also ran a new route which always makes the run more enjoyable!

Other than trying to meet a mileage goal for the year I’m not on any specific training plan right now. I’ve been running at my ‘easy’ treadmill pace for most runs which happens to be faster than my outside pace. But on Thursday when I hopped on the treadmill I just felt like running faster. I guess it was time to do something different on the treadmill besides just jump on and cruise. I choose a ladder workouts (see below on Thursday for more specifics) and that is just what I needed. At an 8:45 pace, this wasn’t my fastest 5K but I definitely haven’t seen any 8′s lately. It felt great to know that I could still run that quickly if I wanted even though it was a incredibly tough workout.

Weekly Workouts

Weekly Running Log | amotherspace.net

Monday: 3 miles (9:27 pace) + 22 minutes QSFR (Quick Strength for Runners) #3 x 2

I started out my week with a quick treadmill run. 1 mile on. 1 round of strength. 1 mile on. 1 round of strength. And then finish with another mile. This is my favorite way to run on a treadmill right now.

Tuesday: Spin 35 minutes + 20 minutes QSFR #4 x 2

Wednesday: 15 minutes Beginner Flexibility Yoga

Yoga Studio App is the best for this beginner. I love that you can pick various routines and the length of the session.

Thursday: 3.1  miles (8:45 pace)

So today I just wanted to run fast. I was on the treadmill and did a ladder workout. I warmed up with .25 miles at 6.0 and then changed the speed every .25 miles after that. 6.5, 7.0, 6.5, 7.5, 6.5, 8.0, 6.5, 7.5, 6.5, 7.0. I finished strong with another 8.0. This was a fun run and it went by quickly because I was always changing the speed on the treadmill.

Friday:  3 miles (9:14 pace) + 20 minutes QSFR #3 x 2

I loved the hip strengthening exercises from Monday so I decided to do them again today. That and another treadmill run for me today.

Saturday:  Rest

Sunday: 7 miles (9:39 pace)

Running on the treadmill all week really makes me appreciate the days when I am able to run outside. Even rain and wind didn’t dampen my spirits during this run. It’s a little amazing that I was able to run in capris and a short sleeve shirt in the middle of December!

Run This Year | A Mother's PaceOne of my main goals for 2014 is to Run This Year in kilometers. That’s 2,014 kilometers or 1,251.44 miles.

Weekly Running Miles: 16.10

December Running Miles: 31.11

2014 Running Miles: 1223.34

2014 Running Kilometers: 1968.77

Do you run faster on the treadmill or outside?

Year of Running: 2014

We’re almost half way through December and so it’s that time of year to reflect on goal setting and reviewing 2014. As in the past 2 years, I’m participating in Miss Zippy’s annual running survey. It’s a fun little mini recap of my year in running. You can head on over to her website to participate in the link up or read more running surveys.  Missed my other posts? Find them here —> 2013 and 2012.

  • Best race experience? Hands down, my best race experience was the Chicago Marathon. It was a perfect day that I wish I could relive over and over. The weather was perfect, the crowd was amazing, my support crew was the best and all this came together with months of training to give me a very significant marathon PR.

Chicago Marathon 2014 | amotherspace.net

  • Best run? Well, if I can’t choose the Chicago Marathon for this one I’ll choose a different race. I ran a half marathon over the summer that was hilly and on gravel roads during pouring rain. What makes this a ‘best run’ was the fact that I couldn’t wipe the silly grin off my face for most of the race. Even though it was hard, I knew that I was doing something that I love.
  • Best new piece of gear?  I never leave the house for a run without my FlipBelt. I used to carry my phone in an armband before this belt because I never run without my phone, mainly for safety reasons. This belt doesn’t move or bounce and I didn’t really believe that until I tried it.
  • Best piece of running advice you received? I read Mind Gym this year and it greatly improved the mental side of running for me and even helped me to set new PRs. The best piece of advice came from that book and that is to practice visualizing the run. Mentally watching yourself throughout a run will help to improve the run when it actually happens. I loved this book and I highly recommend reading it if you are struggling to mentally get through difficult workouts.
  • Most inspirational runner? This year I am going to have to choose Shalane Flanagan. Watching her race the Boston Marathon was so inspirational. She ran an amazing race and reading about her own race experience after the fact showed me what an incredible runner and person she is.
  • If you could sum up your year in a couple of words, what would they be? Motivated and Miles, lots and lots of miles.

And now it’s your turn. I’d love to hear from you.

Pick a question above and answer it in the comments below.
