Fit Mama Friday

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a Friday Favorites post but I couldn’t resist this week. There are too many great things going on around here!

First, I’m excited to be the featured mother on Carly’s Fit Mama Friday over at Fine Fit Day. Head on over to read it and be sure to check out the rest of her blog as well. Carly’s currently in her third trimester of her second pregnancy and she is rocking the workouts and healthy eating! She’s quite an inspiration and always has something fun up on her blog. If you are visiting today because of my feature at Fine Fit Day, welcome! Leave a comment below and introduce yourself. I’d love to connect!

[one] My 6th wedding anniversary was this month and so I thought it was the perfect time to share one of my favorite New Yorker cartoons. I cut it out years ago and pinned it to a bulletin board. It still makes me laugh when I look at it. [two] It’s always an exciting day at our house when we get out the holiday books. I couldn’t be happier that all three of my children are in love with books. [three] A beautiful Kansas sunset. [four] My loves. We’ve had a bunch of snow this January but this week we’ve been enjoying some warmer weather. It’s nice to get outside again! [five] My treadmill run from yesterday plus a strength workout!

Recipes of the Week

So far this month I’ve actually made a lot of recipes that I’ve found online. They’ve all turned out fantastic and I hope you try out something below if it sounds good.

Black Bean, Sweet Corn and Tomato Quinoa Burritos (Make-Ahead, Freezer Friendly) from Iowa Girl Eats.

I made this recipe this past week and doubled it before even making it the first time. I knew all the ingredients sounded fantastic and that I wanted to stash some away in the freezer. I’m so glad that I did that because the recipe turned out delicious, and while the kids didn’t really eat it that well, my husband and I have a lot of burritos for a quick dinner or yummy lunch.

Citrus-Topped Bakery-Style Blueberry Muffins from Peas and Crayons.

To be honest, I have to say that I skipped the citrus topping on these muffins because it didn’t sound good to me. That said, they turned out so good that they are now my go-to muffin recipe. I also doubled this batch and froze some of the muffins. The kids LOVE blueberry muffins defrosted and warmed in the microwave!

Mushroom and Black Bean “Meatballs” from Fit Foodie Mama.

I’ll admit when I made this recipe I was hoping to trick my kids into eating mushrooms. They eat black beans but I can’t get them to enjoy mushrooms. While I failed at getting the kids to eat mushrooms, my husband and I enjoyed this meal.

Easiest Half-Batch Chocolate Chip Cookies from Chelsea’s Messy Apron.

I haven’t made these cookies yet but I still had to share because they look so very yummy.

Favorite Running Gear

This time around I’m picking my treadmill as a favorite. The cold and dark mornings mean that I’m inside on the treadmill, both for warmth and safety. I hear so many people call it a ‘dreadmill’ and I’m so glad I don’t have that attitude about it. My brain definitely wouldn’t be able to handle running on the treadmill if I was negative about it!  I’m just happy to be able to get a run in conveniently at home before we really get our day started. Of course, I always look forward to running outside but the treadmill definitely beats not being able to run at all.

Next week my book club meets and we’ll decide our books for the entire year. Have you read anything that you loved lately? What about something that would make for a great discussion? I would love feedback in this area so that I can bring several good suggestions for the year. I know I want to suggest The Goldfinch  (affiliate link) by Donna Tartt but other than that I haven’t started searching yet. What would you add?

Favorite iPhone Photo Apps

Instagram is probably definitely my favorite form of social media. I love the creativity that people show through their photographs and design abilities and I have fun adding my own pictures to the mix. I’ve made friends with people through Instagram and even met some of those friends in real life.

I always share my daily workout over on Instagram along with some family pics and a food shot mixed in occasionally. If you don’t follow me on Instagram yet, you may find me —– > here.

A few months ago I switched over to an iPhone from an Android phone and I’m loving all the new apps. There are a bunch of fabulous free apps out there to enhance photos that you take with your iPhone. And today you’re in luck because I’m sharing my secrets! If you don’t have an iPhone, I feel your pain. I loved my Android but ultimately decided to go with an iPhone because of all the apps that weren’t available to Android users.

I’ve come across several photo apps that have become my favorites so I thought I would pass them on to you. I’m not associated with any of these apps other than the fact that I like them. If you want to try them out just search for the name in your app store. All of the apps that I have on this list are free but if you want to add more features many of them have that option for various prices. I personally haven’t paid for anything with these apps and still find them very useful.

I’ve almost finished this post a few times over the past couple of months and in that time I’ve added a couple of really fun apps. I can’t wait to find out what is new and exciting around the corner but for right now these are my favorites.

I’m amazed at all Photofy has to offer, for free! It has designs, creative fonts, borders, stickers and more. It’s an easy to use app that has quickly become my favorite. Before finding Photofy I used A Beautiful Mess a lot. Fotor, Photogrid and BeFunky also have honorable mention here. I use all of them occasionally for various features and are worth checking out for variety.

Photofy |

This is the app that I use most with my running posts on Instagram. After you take a photo just plug in your exercise (usually for me that’s running), time, distance and any comment you may want to add. Then you pick how you want the wording to show up on your photo. It also has the option to add the pace of your activity. I like the look of this app a lot and how easy it makes sharing the information of a workout.

FitSnap |

GorillaCam is the app I use to take multiple self-timer photos. We’ve used it to try and get a good family photo (is that really possible with 3 kids under 5???) but mostly I use it to take some interesting running photos when I’m out by myself. The photos below I took with GorillaCam (you can program it to take a certain amount of photos) then I picked out my favorite (the biggest one below) and edited it in Photofy to add the words.

I look forward to opening Timehop every day. Basically this app pulls together posts from Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc., from years past and puts it together each day. I LOVE to see how much the kids have grown throughout the years and it’s also fun to see what my workouts have been like in the past. My favorite Timehop surprises are of my dog, MIka. She died almost 3 years ago now and I still miss her every day. It’s a nice surprise to see a photo of her when I’m not expecting it! You can also share these photos easily from the app which makes for an easy #tbt (throwback thursday) post.

Timehop |

I typically only use the Repost app when I want to enter into a giveaway on Instagram and you enter by reposting the post. It’s an easy way to give credit to someone when you are reposting their photo.

Photo Sync

Every time I come home Photo Sync automatically downloads the new photos that I have taken onto our computer over the WiFi in our house. Not having to worry about backing up my phone is priceless because it rarely got done before this.

What is your favorite photo app? Do you use any of my favorites?

What would you add to this list?

Craziness + Favorites

Can we just talk about how cold it got all of a sudden?

Dentist Visit |

I took my kids to the dentist on Monday afternoon. While we were waiting for the dentist we talked about playing outside when we got home to enjoy the last little bit of warm weather for awhile. When we left not even an hour later I was shocked to see that the temps had dropped 20 degrees. It was only in the 50’s at that point but the wind was horrible. I felt awful that I hadn’t put jackets on the kids. Needless to say we played inside before dinner instead of outside.

The other crazy environmental thing that happened here in Kansas this week was that we had an earthquake. Yes, you read that right, an earthquake. In Kansas.

You may be surprised to hear that we have them pretty often in the Midwest but this one was different. I’ve only felt one other earthquake before and that was a couple of months ago. The earthquake on Wednesday was strong (4.8 magnitude!) and lasted quite awhile. I braced myself while I was standing and watched things shake in my house. I even looked out the window to see if something had happened outside (tornado or plane crash???) before I realized that it was an earthquake. Craziness!

And now on to some of my favorites from the week.

Instagram |

[one] Yoga + Kettlebells with my little monkeys. They always want to participate when they see me exercising! [two] My happy place, especially when I’ve been missing my regular routine of running a lot of miles lately. [three] Bedtime snuggles are the best. [four] Brrr…it’s cold. Coffee tastes even better in the winter. [five] Library Story Time is one of our favorite activities of the week. I love to watch Little E participate. She dances and sings to all the songs. And Little O is such a good reader and has been picking up some nonfiction lately. He’s teaching me all sorts of facts!

Currently Eating

This week I was searching for a vegetarian slow cooker recipe. We’re trying to eat at home more and also cut food costs a little while still buying quality food. All the recipes that looked good in my go-to slow cooker cookbooks have meat in them which brings the $$ up a lot. So I headed over to Pinterest and searched for the perfect recipe. And did I ever find it!

{Slow Cooker} Mexican Quinoa from Chelsea’s Messy Apron was the perfect find. It was filling and has a lot of our favorite ingredients. Black beans, sweet potatoes, and quinoa plus all the spices of a yummy Mexican dish. The only problem was that the kids didn’t really like it because it was a little on the spicy side. We served it with quesadillas, a salad and fresh cut veggies so even though they didn’t eat the main dish they still had a healthy meal.

This was taken before turning on the slow cooker. It thicken up and was delicious over tortilla chips or a bed of lettuce.

That’s all for this Friday! Enjoy your weekend, friends!
