A New Home

Welcome to my new home. My husband and I have spent some time over the past several weeks switching A Mother’s Pace from Blogger to WordPress. We’re here now, so welcome! I’m still learning the ropes so please leave a comment, send an email or tweet me if you see anything that needs attention.

My long run of the week was supposed to be a 10 miler and after being on the treadmill all week I was looking forward to getting out and enjoying some fresh air. It was a cold one on Saturday so I put on my layers of running clothes and headed outside.

I didn’t get very far. I took one step onto the sidewalk, slipped on the ice and turned around to go inside. The winter weather had arrived earlier than I thought so my run would be inside instead.

Let me tell you that it’s tough to switch gears and unexpectedly head down to the treadmill. That was the hardest 10 miles I’ve ran in a long time. I stopped the treadmill to stretch a few times but I always got back on to finish it out.

This was my first run in my brand new PROCompression shamrock socks. My husband and I both bought a pair to wear for our upcoming St. Patty’s Day race and I couldn’t wait to try them out. They are not as tight as my other compression socks, the CEP brand, but I did enjoy running in them.

A First Birthday!

The mornings are slowly started to get just a little brighter a bit earlier. That means that running outside in the mornings will happen for me very soon! I did manage to get out a couple times last week and loved the fresh air.

My long run was on the treadmill though. I ran a personal distance record of 12 miles on the mill! I’ll write more about it later on in the week because it meant a lot to me for more than one reason.

Week 3 of my half marathon training is all wrapped up and went really well. I accomplished all of my distance and pace goals for the week but I was lacking on the strength and cross workouts.

I missed my typical spin session on Sunday morning. I had a house full of people and my spin bike is about 4 feet from where someone was sleeping. I have to admit that it was a little nice to sleep in instead of waking up early to workout. It was a busy week though and I’m hoping to fit in more strength workouts and cross training this week.

We celebrated Little E’s first birthday over the weekend.

Somehow she’s one already. Her personality is really shining and she had so much fun at the party

She destroyed her cake. Yes, she had chocolate cake. Neither of my other children had eaten chocolate at all before turning one but Little E has probably been eating it since around 6 months. She loves it. She just wanted to eat what we were eating right from the beginning!

Running Through the Years

I’ve been running for many years (since junior high track) but I would always stay under the 5 mile mark. Maybe I ran more than that a few times during cross country in high school but mainly I kept the miles pretty low.

Then in 2006 I decided to run a half marathon and I haven’t really ever turned back. I vividly remember how hard that first ever 10 mile run was. So tough and I couldn’t imagine adding 3.1 miles on top of that! But I did it and since then I’ve gone on to run a marathon.

Why am I thinking back on my miles? I ran my long run on the treadmill this weekend. It wasn’t that long of a run for me (8 miles) but it got me thinking back to the first few times that I had run that distance and how far I’ve come in the past several years.

Back when I first started running longer distances I never would have imagined running 8 miles on a treadmill, for fun. Outside was hard enough so I didn’t even consider the treadmill.

This weekend I wanted to run outside but the roads and sidewalks were just too snowy and icy. It wasn’t that tough of a decision to stay inside and run. Running for 1 hour and 13 minutes on a treadmill might not have been my first choice but I still enjoyed the run.

9 miles is my personal distance record on the treadmill but probably not for long. I’m sure I’ll have to take a long run inside at some point this year while I’m training for my spring half or my fall full and, strangely, I’m kind of looking forward to it.

I think the reason why I wanted to write this all out was to remember how far I’ve come in my running journey. Running these longer distances during training is something I look forward to now and not something that seems as impossible as it once did.
