{February 2015} #5bythe5th Virtual Race

It’s time for my favorite virtual race of the year! Laura over at Mommy Run Fast hosts the 5 by the 5th race each year and I’m participating in it once again in 2015. The runners that have signed up for the race choose if they want to run a 5k, 5 miles or a combination by the 5th of each month. It runs from February through May.

A year ago when I ran the 5 by the 5th virtual race I ran my 5k personal best at 24:38 which is an 8:03 pace. I call this my PB instead of my PR because it wasn’t at an official race. My PR in the 5k distance is 25:38 as of last May at one of our local 5k races.

Initially when I thought about this virtual race series I wanted to improve my 5k time from last year but running 3.1 miles at that pace is very intimidating to me right now. Instead I’m deciding to do my best for the fitness that I am right now and try and improve on that over the next couple months of the series.

That makes much more sense, right?

One resource that I will reference throughout the next few months is Tina Muir’s guest post over at Laura’s blog called How to Train for a Faster 5k. Tina, an elite runner that also blogs over at Fuel Your Future with Tina Muir, shared five workouts for a faster 5k. Perfect timing!

So how did my first 5 by the 5th race of 2015 go? Ugh, it was hard and not as fast as I wanted but it gives me a good baseline as to how I want to improve over the next few months.

I ran the 5k during the week in the morning which meant that it was on the treadmill. As much as I would prefer to run these virtual races out on the street I am not running outside in the early morning right now mainly because of the darkness. So I hit the treadmill instead.

I ran a mile warm up in 9:32. Stopped for a drink of water. (I’m not coordinated enough to drink water from a water bottle on the treadmill. Maybe a bottle with a straw would be easier?) Then started back up for the 5k. I started at 7.0 speed on my ‘mill, which is an 8:34 pace. Ideally, this was the pace that I wanted to hold for the entire 3.1 miles.

That didn’t happen.

After about a mile in I had to slow it down. I punched in 6.5 (9:14 pace) and held that for awhile before jumping back up to 7.0. I did this back and forth pace for the remainder of the run except in the last quarter mile I pushed the pace up to 7.5 (8:00 pace) for a strong finish.

After I finished the 5k, I started my cool down. In total I ran 5 miles with an average pace of 9:03.

It completely showed on this run that I haven’t done any formal speed work since training for the Chicago Marathon. Yikes! Of course I’ve done an occasional fartlek workout or 400 repeats here and there but this run has convinced me to add it into my weekly rotation!

Run This Year and Race Goals Update

Back in January I announced that I had Big Goals for the New Year and I’m checking in today to update you on my progress for the past 6 months.

St. Patrick's Day Party and Run | amotherspace.net

My Goal Race

I hadn’t signed up for Chicago yet or known that it was going to be a lottery system for the first time this year but back in January I announced that my goal race was to run the Chicago Marathon on October 12th. I’m definitely on track with this one because I am in week 4 of my training cycle.

14 in 2014

I also planned to run 14 races in the year 2014. So far I’ve raced 5 road races and 4 virtual races. Initially I had wanted to only count road races for this goal but I’m not sure that I would make that goal at this point. Virtual races count officially so I’m keeping them in my total for now as well.

It’s been a fun year of PR’s in the 5k,10k and the half marathon. I’ve also managed to place in my age group at a couple of races!

So far I’ve raced the Frosty 5k, 5 by the 5th February, 5 by the 5th March, St. Patrick’s Day Party & Run 4 miler, 5 by the 5th April, Easter Sun Run 10k, World Run Virtual Race, Prairie Fire Half Marathon and the Get Your Rear in Gear 5k.

Run This Year

Lastly, my most lofty goal was to run this year in kilometers. That’s 2,014 kilometers for the year or 1,251.44 miles for 2014. I have never ran this many miles in a year before but I knew that in training for a spring half and a fall full this goal would be within my sight. I just need to keep running in between my training plans to get the mileage in for the year.

So far for the year I’ve logged 611.07 miles which means I am only 14.65 miles away from the halfway mark. Considering that my mileage is only increasing with the upcoming marathon training long runs, I think this goal is right on track.

Did you set 2014 goals? How are they coming along?

April #5bythe5th Virtual Race

I’m sure that all of you have ran a race just for fun and not for time or a personal best.

That’s what happened for me this week when I went out to run my 5 by the 5th virtual race. It’s the 3rd in the series from Laura over at Mommy Run Fast and we have one left to go in May. It was hard for me to fit a fast 5k into my training plan for the week so I just decided to run this one for fun during my ‘easy’ running day on Friday.

We were traveling and staying with Nana and Papa so I was able to run out in the country on the gravel roads. I set out in the morning in the chilly air. I had packed to run in 42 degree weather but it ‘felt like’ 18. I thought I would be freezing in my light jacket and capris but it ended up o.k.

The wind was at my back on the way out to the cows. I succeeded in scaring them all (not that I was trying at all!). They were right up at the fence when I first started approaching but quickly ran away.

I turned around and the cold air made the second half of my run a little more challenging.Overall, it ended up being a great run. I love the peacefulness of the country. The roosters were crowing and some fields had been burnt recently so the smell was strong.

It’s just a completely different environment than I usually run in and the variety is very motivating.

My initial goal when starting this 5 by the 5th series was to run each race a little faster. But ultimately my goal race at the beginning of May is much more important to me so this will have to do for this month.

Evidently, Friday was also my 7 year anniversary with Nike+!

I remember when I bought my first ipod and had the shoe pod to help track my runs. It seems like much longer than 7 years ago in some ways and yet at the same time not very long ago at all.

And now on to the rest of my training from last week. I just finished up week 9 of the Train Like a Mother Own It Plan.

Weekly Training Log | amotherspace.net

Last week was a bad training week. I only ran 3 days out of the 5 typical days that I run AND I skipped both my speed work sessions. I have a ton of excuses but I’m just calling it a bad week and moving on. This week will be better!
